A big list of ingredients for baking can be stored in the freezer, cupboard and fridge and is limited to the space available. However, if you are new to baking or are setting up your first kitchen, you will be glad to know that you can also narrow your list down to some essentials for everyday baking like making pancakes, muffins, pies, and cookies, etc.

Flour:

The all-purpose flour is correctly named as its the primary ingredient required for making cookies, muffins, pancakes, and cookies. Created from the blending of hi-gluten hard wheat and low-gluten wheat, the fluffy texture comes from being milled for removing all wheat bran and germ.

 


 

Baking Soda:

It is a type of alkaline leavener that can work when it is combined with heat and acid. Acidic ingredients that can activate baking soda for fermenting dairy milk like yogurt, buttermilk and sour cream, cocoa powder, vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, cream of tartar and citrus juice.


 Sugar: 

Granulated sugar is used in all types of baking procedures. Granulated sugar is made up of the juice of beets or sugarcane, and it is stripped from the natural molasses and is further refined for looking white. Raw sugar also retains its tan colour.

 


 

Eggs:

They help in binding together. They are listed as ingredients in the recipes. It is assumed to have large-sized eggs for baking. The eggs can be stored in the fridge for days.

 


Yeast:

It is the type of biological product that works quite slower than any other chemical leavener. It takes time for the yeast cells to create carbon dioxide and naturally metabolize it. Basic bread baking can store dry yeast in the pantry for many months.

 


Unsalted butter:

They are used in baking. Unless it is mentioned in the recipes to start using salted butter, you can also freeze butter unless you need it. Butter is used well in pastry dough, cookie dough, and batter and in icing and frosting for the rich flavour and texture that makes these baked goods irresistible.


Vegetable Oil:

 

Along with the neutral flavour, vegetable oil is an important ingredient in many recipes and can be used for oiling pans just before you start baking. You can also use Canola oil which is considered a healthy form of vegetable oil prepared from rapeseed and can also be used interchangeably in recipes.


 Milk:

It provides moisture to the batter. You will require a quarter of milk every time you bake waffles and pancakes. Whole milk provides a rich flavour as compared to low-fat milk.


 Cocoa Powder:

It is a by-product of the process for extracting all important elements of cocoa pod. The Cocoa powder is present as the last extract in the pod. The cocoa powder is quite bitter and can add colour and flavour to the bake. It is available in two variants, dark cocoa powder and light cocoa powder, and the difference is only the cocoa tint, i.e. dark or light, and is used per the recipes.

 

 


 Vanilla Extract:

Buying out the natural extract for vanilla is used widely in baking processes. For baking, you may want a few other extracts like lemon and almond for other baking endeavours. Even whole vanilla beans can also be used for flavouring sauces and batter.


 Yogurt:

It is used many times and can be used as a substitute for eggs in any bakery recipe to create an eggless version. Yogurt can be used in baking recipes to bring up the acidity level with baking soda. Buttermilk and yogurt can make the baking processes tender and moist. It also maintains the level of moisture even after the goods are baked. Using yogurt in baking will enhance their texture and will provide a velvety feel to the food.


 Dried Nuts and Fruits:

For dried nuts and fruits are bonuses for the baker pantry. They are used for increasing the flavour of many recipes. To start baking, we recommend stocking your pantry with cranberries, figs and dates, and many nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pecans, which can be stored in the freezer to extend their freshness lifespan.


 Baking chocolate:

To start baking, you can opt for a sweet, unsweetened or bittersweet variety of baking chocolate. It is included as an ingredient in many chocolate recipes like cakes, puddings, etc. Sweet baking chocolates are used at times in place of the chocolate chips, and you can try breaking them into small chunks to provide a rustic feel to the recipes.


Salt:

Salt is used regularly in baking recipes for increasing the flavours of the recipes. Salt is used in recipes for balancing the sweetness for cookie doughs or cake batters. A pinch of salt is required while baking any cake, pie or pudding. In loaves of bread, salt is added not just for taste because it will not only help in controlling the rate of yeast growing on combining it with flour for any recipe.


 Icing Sugar:

Icing sugar is considered to be a mixture of powdered sugar along with cornflour. Many times the sugar and icing sugar are mistaken and cannot be used interchangeably. Icing sugar is widely used in preparing buttercreams as it helps in frosting and is used in cookies to add texture to the crunchy-crispy cookie.
